What do you do?

I began serving as the Senior Pastor of Royston Baptist Church on July 1, 2018. My greatest joys in ministry are preaching and getting to know people. I guess you could say that I am a lover of stories - both as a storyteller and a story-listener; I am passionate about connecting our stories to God’s Great Big Story of Love and Redemption. As Pastor of Royston Baptist Church my goal is to remind others that they are God’s Beloved in all that I say and do. It is my hope that RBC can continue to be and continually become a place that is and a people that are overflowing with the love and grace of Jesus.

Tell us about your family

Mary Kate and I met while in seminary at the McAfee School of Theology in Atlanta. She is much prettier than me, and she is way smarter than I will ever be. We were married in Boone, NC on April 13, 2013. Our twin daughters, Adeline and Dorothy, we born in Richmond, VA on January 3, 2016, and they have kept us busy and laughing ever since. We also have two dogs - Boomer and Jasper.

What do you enjoy and how do you spend your free time?

First and foremost, I love being Daddy to Dorothy and Adeline and being Mary Kate’s husband and parenting partner - I absolutely love spending time with my family. I am also passionate about BBQ and love to smoke BBQ on my 275 gallon fuel tank turned smoker trailer that has the vanity license plate “HOLYSMK.” I like to dabble in painting and other creative artistic expressions. I once watched a Bob Ross video and painted a wintry scene of which I am quite proud. I also enjoy woodturning, and I am forever indebted to my friend and master woodworker, Scott, for patiently teaching me some skills.

Favorite Ice Cream

The best ice cream in the world is found at Gelati Celesti in Richmond, VA, but since that is quite a journey for a scoop or two of ice cream, my favorite ice cream is just about any flavor of Blue Bell Ice Cream.

Favorite Bible Verse

Isaiah 43:1 - “But now, says the Lord—the one who created you, Jacob, the one who formed you, Israel: Don’t fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; and you are mine.”

What were the last great books you read?

Life of the Beloved by Henri Nouwen

Wherever I Wind Up: My Quest for Truth, Authenticity, and The Perfect Knuckleball by R.A. Dickey

4th and Goal Every Day: Alabama’s Relentless Pursuit of Perfection by Phil Savage and Ray Glier

Anything else?

I earned a Bachelor of Arts in Religion Degree from Samford University, and Master of Divinity at The McAfee School of Theology at Mercer University; but the greatest thing I did while at McAfee was to convince a wildly beautiful fellow seminarian to marry me and to journey with me as a partner in ministry and life.

A few things that I love: Mary Kate; Adeline and Dorothy; their dogs, Boomer and Jasper; the Atlanta Braves and the University of Alabama Crimson Tide; cooking, eating, and laughing.

I can solve a rubix cube in less than 90 seconds (not world-record speed, but still faster than the average human) and I was once featured on a Christian rap album under the pseudonym “Suga Free.”
