Welcome to Royston Baptist Church’s Special Needs Vacation Bible School

We want to make our Vacation Bible School a place where children of all abilities are welcome!  The initial blessing we will receive is children with special needs will hear about Jesus in ways they can understand.  The long term blessing will be that families may see us as a church that nurtures and cares for their individual needs.

In order for us to provide the best experience for your child, please complete our Special Needs VBS Registration Form.

As you consider registering your child for VBS, you may want to scan our FAQ’s below:

1.   Who will help my child participate in VBS so he/she will benefit from all that it will offer?

Every child who registers will have a one on one companion who has been trained to work with children having special needs.  This volunteer will be by your child’s side throughout the week, assisting him/her with whatever is needed to facilitate full participation in all activities.

2.  What medical personnel will be available for emergencies?

There will be a registered nurse on site throughout the week to assist with any basic needs that would arise.  Cell phone access will be constant if emergency personnel need to be contacted.  Ty Cobb Hospital is located minutes from the church.  There will also be a registered Occupational Therapist on staff to assist the children as needed as well as other rehab professionals familiar with children having special needs.

3.    Who will help my child with self care such as feeding and/or        bathrooming needs?

Your child’s companion will remain with him/her throughout the morning to assist with these needs as reported by you the parent.  There will be a male on staff for the males if your child needs this for bathrooming assistance.  There will be a private changing area for those children needing special attention.  Parents are required to supply diapers/wipes and any other specific needs for bathrooming.

4.     What kind of training will volunteers have to be able to work        with my child?

Volunteers will be provided a 1-2 hour training session prior to VBS week.  This session will address general information for working with children having disabilities.  Volunteers will be introduced to ways to communicate effectively and ways to include children with special needs in the typical VBS classroom.  Prior to the week, each child/volunteer will be provided with additional modifications for classroom participation by professionals knowing how to adapt typical curriculum.

5.     Will there be allowances made for my child if he/she needs a        break away from the typical classroom?

Yes.  There will be a self-contained room specifically designed for children who cannot tolerate the regular VBS classroom or who need some time away from the stimulation.  This classroom will also be available for those children who would not necessarily benefit from being with the typical children and would benefit more from individual attention and modified curriculum.
